From the Inside Out

There’s a saying that we have six months out of the year to stay out of other people’s business and another six to mind our own. It’s meant to show us the value of…well, minding our business. An entire genre in the entertainment industry is built on peering into the lives of other people. Social media flourishes because of the same thing. And so many devour it. While reveling in the perceived drama and chaos of everyone else's lives, it becomes easier to neglect our own mess or even pretend for a moment that it doesn’t exist.

Since I mentioned entertainment, there is an episode of the tv show Friends  called “The One with the Secret Closet”. In her apartment, the character Monica has a closet that she keeps locked. No one is allowed to open it except her. Monica is known among her group of friends for being a meticulous neat freak. So it’s shocking to discover what she keeps inside that closet.

I find that episode so interesting because it is a huge reflection of the life many live. On the outside, we are the definition of perfection. We don’t show people anything less. But deep within us are some hidden things we don’t want to show others. Sometimes it’s unforgiveness, doubt, fear, or even unbelief. Those hidden things, however, are causing some serious damage. From within. And at times, it’s not noticeable until the effects begin to manifest outwardly.

It’s of value to remember that God searches our hearts. While it may be easy to conceal things from others, we can never hide anything from God. Rather than try, use the opportunities of prayer to truly bare yourself and seek the change that will empty out that closet. Each day is a new day and another opportunity to tackle shedding more of what doesn’t belong and totally surrendering to God. As long as that is your focus, you’ll never be empty. God will fill any voids with more and more of Him. Trust Him to help you through that process.

Stay Sunny!
