Time for a Soil Test

I was conversing with a study group recently about forgiveness. In particular, we were talking about how we, at times, deceive ourselves into believing we’ve let something go. Only for it to come rising to the surface when a trigger sets it off. Then we realize, uh oh, that’s still there.

I often relate these spiritual lessons to the things we see in our everyday lives because it regularly astounds me. This is no different and I’ll direct our attention to a little thing called gardening. I by no means claim to possess a green thumb, but I have dabbled a little in the world of plant life. In my prior home I nursed a few flowers and veggies. There were some successes and some try again moments too. One of the things I learned is that it is important how healthy my soil is. If my soil isn’t healthy, then one obvious drawback will be a lack of growth.

Think about that. If in my natural garden, I’ve planted seeds for sunflowers or roses and what emerges are some extremely healthy weeds, then I’d be puzzled. Head scratcher, right? But it would also be an indicator that there is a problem in my soil. Especially if roses and daisies never surface.

This is the same for my spiritual soil (that’s my heart). If the seeds of joy, peace, forgiveness, love, and all those positive things have been planted, but they aren’t flourishing, then something is wrong. It’s time for a soil test. I just might discover that there is some unforgiveness that is choking out the peace and the love. Maybe there is some doubt that’s smothering the patience and the kindness.

The important thing is not to shirk the work involved in uprooting the problems. The important first step is in consulting the master gardener. Not someone that has put in a few hours to earn the title. But the Master Gardener. There is no one more qualified to tend to your field than God himself. So when you find yourself face to face with an problem that you’ve been struggling to handle on your own, then it’s the perfect opportunity to step aside and allow God to handle it.

Stay Sunny!
